LA Raptor Study
The RCDSMM has recently become a part of the LA Raptor Study alongside Friends of Griffith Park! This incredible community led initiative allows residents located throughout LA County to monitor raptors (hawks, falcons and owls) in urban environments to better understand how these birds of prey are adapting to living in such close proximity with humans.
During the project, community scientists monitor the nest of a nearby raptor, or raptors, and submit photos and updates to a dedicated team of ornithologists, including the RCDSMM’s very own Dr. Dan Cooper! Volunteers observe the nests from early spring throughout summer, tracking nest creation, egg incubation, hatching and eventually fledging.
Training for this annual project occurs in February! If you’re interested, fill out this volunteer application. If you have questions email us.
If you come across this page after training has taken place you can still get involved! If you see a hawk on your block or a raptor of any kind, you can submit the location (address or cross streets) and any other details you have (photos and videos welcome) in the tips form at tinyurl.com/LARaptorTips. Be sure to follow the RCDSMM (@rcdsmm) or @FriendsOfGriffithPark on socials for exciting updates on this project!
