Outdoor Field Programs
Our environmental field programs are an excellent opportunity for students to develop a deeper connection to the natural world, enhance classroom learning and gain hands-on scientific experience. Each program offers several stations with hands-on activities that can be adapted for a wide range of learning styles. Below is an overview of the 3 field program options. Click the link below for full details and a pathway to book your program.
- Coastal Exploration at Malibu Lagoon: plankton, native fish, estuarine birding, water quality testing & beach ecology
- Oak Woodland Stewardship at Tapia Park: woodland walk, acorn grinding, nature human connections, habitat restoration & stewardship
- Urban Watershed Connection at Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve: introduction to habitat, foodwebs, plankton, birding, water quality
Advanced field programs offer students a unique experience to engage more deeply with local ecosystems while using scientific methods guided by RCD Conservation Biologists and includes opportunities to work with specialized equipment, make observations, understand sensitive species care and monitoring, and to learn to record data. Pre-site preparation and post-site follow-up are suggested to support students’ preparation for the field and to help integrate experiential knowledge.
Advanced programs may feature any of the following:
- Oak woodland restoration
- Invasive species management
- Bird surveys
- Water quality monitoring
- Endangered fish studies
- Habitat monitoring
Learning levels: Appropriate for grades 6-12 with an established understanding of environmental science.
